Intellect Directory of Australian and New Zealand Cinema - Mark Ryan

Mark David Ryan is guest editing the horror movies section of the Intellect Directory of Australian and New Zealand Cinema edited by Ben Goldsmith and Geoff Lealand.

The Intellect Directory of Australian and New Zealand Cinema is part of a major new publishing initiative by British publishing company Intellect to establish the Directory of World Cinema series, a set of volumes on cinema from around the world - including Australia and New Zealand. Each volume will consist of three parts:

1) A pre-print web-based database, which will facilitate content collection and provide free access to the content.

2) A series of print volumes each of about 300 pages, each covering a world region. Each volume will be published annually without the duplication of material between each year's edition (however, it is possible that a future volume may contain a review of the same film, but by another author).

3) Post-publication online PDFs of the published material that is sold to libraries through a partner such as EBSCOhost.

The structure for each volume is as follows: an introductory essay, followed by reviews grouped together into chapters each devoted to a genre (for example classics, cult, blockbusters, animation, martial arts etc.). Each chapter will have a short introductory essay of its own.

The Australian horror movie chapter, provides a general overview to the history of Australian horror cinema, and reviews a selection of key Aussie horror flicks from the 2000s. In essence this work examines a key and often unremarked local creative industries 'hot-spot' and a vibrant sub-sector of the broader Australian film industry. The production of Aussie horror movies is a successful export-oriented film sector recently carving out a lucrative niche in global markets.
