Development of the Creative Industries in China

The current phase of our China research combines two strands. The first follows the development slogan From Made in China to Created in China. We continue to examine how, and under what conditions, creative industry and creative economy discourses are emerging in various locations in China and East Asia. The key sectors of interest are television, film, digital media (games and interactive content), design (urban, industrial and fashion) and advertising.

Firm strategy and innovation in the creative industries

This project is primarily concerned with the way in which technological change and globalization are impacting on the strategy and competitiveness of the creative industries. It focuses on a specific segment of the creative industries – the post, digital and visual effects sector (PDV). This is a thriving and increasingly technologically sophisticated sector which accounts for a growing share of production expenditure in film, TV and commercials production. The rapid evolution of creative industries such as PDV is creating new, or at least enhanced, international competitive opportunities.

This major three-year project unites the research team with an expert group of strategists and technologists from some of Australia’s major cultural institutions, to examine how the evolution of digital literacy and content creation can create a new audience of active cultural participants.

The project is led by Angelina Russo, who has substantial experience in the theory and practice of museum communication and new media. Dr Russo was awarded the prestigious 2005 Smithsonian Fellowship by the Queensland Premier.

Remix My Lit

The term 'remix' may be new but the idea itself is time-honoured. Remix is all about taking existing material and making something new out of it. It's a familiar concept in music but extends to all creative content so why isn't the literati getting amongst it? There's no reason why writers can't mix, match, push and pull content to create remixed works. And that's why remix my lit exists. We don't like buzz words, but if we had to use them we'd probably say we are a web 2.0 online collaborative space for creative people who want to get stuck up to their elbows in remixing!

Standards and Metadata

The film industry uses a large amount of information for decision-making and reuse of existing material. However, it lacks techniques and tools to enable the effective organisation, discovery and reuse of such information. In November 2006 we interviewed AFTRS staff to gain insights into current work practices and requirements, and to assess the scope for innovation. Based on these interviews, we developed a number of use cases for the pre-production, production and post-production stages. These will be used to evaluate the methodology and software system.

The Uses of Multimedia

Innovation in digital content and creative industries relies on active and creative consumers. New multimedia technologies require new capabilities (‘literacy’). Cultural acceptance and social uptake are more decisive determinants of market success than technology as such; but public policy and academic research both focus overly on the production end of the value chain.
