Dr Mark Ryan a Senior Research Associate in the CCI and Research Fellow and Lecturer in Film and Television for the Creative Industries Faculty, Queensland University of Technology. His research focuses on genre cinema and policy, and he lectures in film studies and genre studies.
Mark is an expert on Australian horror films and genre cinema having written extensively on these issues. He has published on film, creative industries, new media and cultural policy. His research has been published in New Review of Film & Television Studies, Media International Australia: Incorporating Culture and Policy, Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies, and Studies in Australasian Cinema, and by prominent international publishers such as Routledge and Sage.
Mark has emerged as a media commentator and one of Australia’s leading commentators on horror movies and the horror genre more generally. He has featured in news stories in wide number of national and international media including BBC World Service, Daily Mail (UK), ABC Radio, Sky News, The Australian, Channel 7 (Cairns), The Age, Triple J, The Canberra Times, and The Courier Mail, among many others. Overall, he has featured in well over 100 media stories in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, India and others.
In 2010 Mark won two awards, including CIF’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research and Innovation, and was nominated for two awards including the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.
