After Recession: A new agenda for the creative industries
From 1998, when the DCMS launched its new vision, the renamed ‘creative industries’ were i linked to a wider economic agenda, in terms of national and city image, employment, wealth creation and as catalysts for innovation across the board. Around this a range of new theoretical and policy agendas became interwoven with those already present within the older notion of ‘cultural industries’. Many of these related to the explosive growth of new communication technologies, but also to an acceptance by cultural policy agencies of the central role of the market in their development.
This talk reviews the evolution of the ‘creative industries’ vision over the last ten years, and in particular examines it in the light of the current ‘recession’. It asks not just about how this recession might impact on the growth of the creative industries, but how it raises questions around the fundamentals of the ‘creative industries’ agenda. To what new directions might it point?
