Dr Mark Ryan was awarded a prestigious Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) Creative Industries Career Fund grant to attend the 2010 Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference (SCMS) held in Los Angeles, March 17 to 21.
Dr Mark Ryan says SCMS is one of the pre-eminent annual screen studies conferences, bringing together leading film scholars from around the globe.
"The award was granted to present the paper, Independent from Everyone! Producing Australian Horror Movies for Global Markets, which continues my ongoing research into the horror movies industry.
"The paper introduced the Australian horror movie industry to many international scholars for the first time, and contributed to an international understanding of horror traditions outside the US and their place in the global horror movie industry.
"It also demonstrated how Australian horror film production operates as an independent sector producing titles for major distributors and global markets".
The Creative Industries Career Fund is a national competitive philanthropic grant scheme providing small grants to promising creatives and professionals within the fields of creative industries.

Each year the Cultural Fund, including the Creative Industries Career Fund, allocates $100,000 to support individual career development in the creative industries, allocating grants of up to $5,000 to support activities such as professional training and travel. CAL's Cultural Fund Manager, Zoë Rodriguez, says: 'CAL's Creative Industries Career Fund focuses on providing "frontline" assistance to Australian creators by funding activities that directly help their career progression. While the Fund primarily targets the individual, the flow-on effect is that creative industries benefit collectively from the increase in skills and expertise.'
